Dramaturgy
New writing development, refining ideas, supporting artists
Her Approach
Her Approach to the Work
Mary is an experienced dramaturg and script reader, specialising in new drama development. She is passionate about working with writers, directors and artists to clarify and refine their ideas at any stage of their development – whether it’s acting as a sounding board to test out early thoughts, reading a draft of a script and offering feedback, or attending rehearsals and giving notes to the production team. Mary is also a skilled researcher and script editor and can assist with developing conceptual ideas, background research, or giving talks to the company on specific subjects.
Mary’s approach is always artist-led; she never tries to impose her own ideas on what she feels the project should be. Instead, she actively listens to each individual to discern what they are trying to say through their work and centres her support around the artist’s own aims and vision for the piece. Mary is flexible in her approach and will adapt to suit the needs of the project. She is particularly passionate about new writing and musicals but is equally excited by classical and early modern plays and adaptations.
Mary studied dramaturgy with Dr Katalin Trencsényi on the MA in Text and Performance course at RADA and Birkbeck College. She was offered a literary internship at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut, USA, in 2017 where she learned from dramaturgs Anne G. Morgan and Carrie Chapter especially. Mary returned to the US in 2019 to attend the New Play Dramaturgy Intensive at the Kennedy Center, Washington D.C., and she had the privilege of shadowing lead dramaturg Mark Bly for a week, alongside assisting dramaturg Amanda Watkins on a new play (53% Of by Steph Del Rosso). She has been a member of the Dramaturgs’ Network since 2018.
'‘I worked with Mary on my play ‘Salt’. I started with a 15 minute monologue with the intention of developing it into a full length piece. Mary was invaluable to me during this process. She was able to unlock ideas without making me feel that she was imposing her own. She helped me to fill blind spots, streamline the story and be clear about what I wanted to say. I was provided with several writing exercises that helped me to develop the world around the play, and some of that material made it’s way into the piece. Mary has an amazing ability to enable the writer to go further than they might comfortably go whilst creating a very safe environment. Mary was incredibly supportive throughout the process and I can’t thank her enough for the time that she gave me.’'

1348, Pentreufargirec. A new chaos has arrived — plague. God has betrayed the people, and a frenzy of finger-pointing, cat-hunting and heretic-burning has drowned the village in the toilet. To con-artist Twm, everything is ripe for the picking. With people dying, there’s a social ladder to climb. But under the rule of a Tax Collector desperately searching for love, and a revolutionary manure-seller spreading free-thinking amongst the peasantry, Twm will realise that the climb to power has its obstacles. A mischievous, black (death) comedy of crisis and corruption. Welcome to the Black Death — there’s nothing funnier.

“Chris Harris’ script is unassumingly stylish and well-constructed: Golygfeydd… is chaotic, clever and bold, with the right balance of satire and straight-up silliness.”
